What’s It About
Four years after her last encounter with masked killer Michael Myers, Laurie Strode is living with her granddaughter and trying to finish her memoir. Myers hasn’t been seen since, and Laurie finally decides to liberate herself from rage and fear and embrace life. MOVIESinMO REVIEW
So this is what they had us waiting for. This is the big finale of a story that started in 1978 and spawned eight sequels and two mulligans. Was it worth it? That depends on what you were expecting and who you asked. This film had a lot to prove, so finding mistakes were inevitable. The first issue, Halloween Ends opens on Halloween night 2019. At about 15 minutes in, it’s very apparent what the setup is and how weak of a story this will be. After a pointless opening setup, we see the title and the major players’ names. That included the person portraying Michael Myers. In the credits (opening and closing), he is called “The Shape.” But no worries, that’s not a dealbreaker. Halloween is a slasher film, not an Academy contender. The main problem here is the pace. It’s extremely slow as they try and add unnecessary depth to a 44-year-old horror movie. NOBODY goes to see Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Child’s Play, or Hellraiser for the deep well-thought-out story and character development. We see these movies for the creative killing of some of the dumbest people on the planet. You know, those people that walk into danger, at night, with a flashlight that doesn’t work. In Halloween Ends, they got rid of our favorite tropes and tried to make us care about the characters. They took away everything that makes this franchise worth watching. Compared to their 2019 reboot (that everyone loved), this third film was as bad as Halloween: Season of the Witch. All they had to do was keep it the same. Didn’t they learn from their 2019 mistake (Halloween kills)? Actually, Halloween Kills wasn’t that bad. It just wasn’t as good as its predecessor. As for Halloween Ends, it gives you forgettable characters, unnecessary flashbacks, and an embarrassing kill count. Michael Myers was so disappointing. That had to be the reason he’s called “The Shape” in the credits. Overall, Halloween Ends has a weak story with an anti-climactic forced ending.
