MOVIESinMO REVIEW

Movies like this will always cause shock and disbelief because of how shockingly animalistic the action of specific individuals can be. Most people know America was founded on forced slavery, preconceived hatred, and the self-righteousness of those in political power. Films that highlight this type of behavior tend to come off as fictional in the eyes of a young demographic. They seem to believe that extreme racism, as seen in Till, could only have happened hundreds or maybe thousands of years ago. The events in this movie happened in 1955. Till is not a new story, nor is it a one-time thing. This is a film that shows how scared and insecure White people act. This has been their nature throughout history. If they can cause chaos to help themselves feel important, they will. It’s easy to tell the story of Emmitt Till. We, as a people, have told stories of racist behavior for years. Unfortunately, in the past years, most of these racist acts have come at the hands of the police. And no matter how many stories we tell or how many times we hear about racial injustice, it makes an extreme difference once you see it. In Till, we see things through the eyes of Emmitt’s mother, Mamie. From the time the film starts, there’s an unsettling feeling. Her only child wants to go to Mississippi to visit his cousins. If you knew the history of the south (even today), you would understand her concern. Mamie takes us on an emotional rollercoaster of heartache that no mother should ever go through. The wrongful and horrendous death of her son, Emmitt Til, will forever be a reminder of how racist White Americans feel about people of color. Including the steps they are willing to take to make their insignificant lives have meaning. Till is not an entertaining movie. Till is the type of true cinema that needs to be produced as often as possible until our youth understands what real racism is and how it continues to affect all of our lives. In short, slavery was not a choice, White people will lie instantly, and our government is as corrupt as portrayed on TV. Finally, Till is an excellent movie with an incredible cast that will make you feel every soul-crushing defeat Mamie had to experience at the hands of our “justice” system.
