MOVIESinMO REVIEW
This came out of nowhere. With very little advertising and lots of word of mouth, Smile is a surprise hit. The premise is simple, but the explanation becomes more and more complex as the movie progresses. A therapist named Dr. Rose Cotter witnesses her patient horrifically commit suicide. Before her death, the patient was rambling in horror about a smiling entity. From there, we witness the slow mental decline of Dr. Cotter. Be forewarned, Smile is a Psychological horror film that moves along intermittently. This is one of those films that keeps you in suspense and makes you think. Rose spends the entirety of the movie experiencing the same things as her last patient. In a way, this would be called karma since her patient needed help and tried desperately to tell her what was going on. But as a therapist, she dismissed it as delusions and gave a textbook diagnosis. Now that the Doctor is seeing things no one else can see, she gets angry at others for not understanding what she’s going through (sounds like karma). Along the way, we get more information regarding the issue. But because of the type of movie this is, it’s hard to tell if she’s hallucinating or it’s really happening. That’s the great thing about Smile. It’s a total mind-phuck. They throw you a curve even after you’ve figured it out and think you know what’s about to happen. Movies like this have been done before, but Smile gives it a fresh take. Besides, if you’re under twenty, this is the first time you’ve seen a film like this. The pace is slow but worth it. To summarize, Smile is a thriller with consequences. Regardless of what the protagonist believes, they will experience the same evil and suffer in their own way.
