MOVIESinMO REVIEW

The highly anticipated sequel to the 2019 Captain Marvel film is finally here, and like most Marvel products lately, The Marvels does not live up to the hype. I didn’t expect much, considering the first Captain Marvel movie was only so-so, and that was only because of Nick Fury. He shined in that one and kept it from completely failing. This time, Fury is barely seen, and it shows. Sadly, The Marvels tries to rely on three characters, although known within comic books, have a very weak following regarding their physical presence. There’s Monica Rambeau, a character created on the WandaVision series. Kamala Khan, also known as Ms. Marvel, was made via a six-episode miniseries called Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel, a character proven unable to carry a film without assistance, along with a very, very forgettable villain named Dar-Benn. The opening of this film gives it potential, but almost immediately, hopes for a decent sequel dies at the hands of Captain Marvel herself. Carol is alone in a space station, and her lack of emotions makes the whole film spiral downward. There are times when the chemistry between the three heroes is great, like when they’re together learning to use their powers through the anomaly that entangled them. But once they separate, you are forced to remember just how boring Brie Larson is as an actress. As for the story, most of it is shown in the trailers. Our three light-based heroes’ powers become entangled, and a villain attacks every planet Captain Marvel calls home. A simple plot, but with extremely wordy exposition, made this film seem a lot longer than it was. Honestly, the post-credit scene was better than the entire film as far as interests are concerned.
