What’s It About

Amid a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua, a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife, is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war—and humankind itself

MOVIESinMO REVIEW

We all knew it was inevitable: another movie about the dangers of an AI takeover. Only this time, it’s not just a disembodied voice heard over a speaker controlling electronics. This time, it has a body and has been given complete control to do the jobs we don’t want to do. In The Creator, humans had become so lazy and full of themselves that any job humans felt was beneath them went to AI. And just like that, a bomb destroyed Los Angeles, California. And yes, Artificial Intelligence was to blame. So, for the next hour and twenty minutes, the movie has the U.S. military on a worldwide elimination of everything and anything AI. At some point, the military finds out about a super AI designed to end humanity. This is about when we meet Joshua, a special military agent whose only mission is to locate the world-ending AI and restore humanity back to the top of the food chain. In between the multiple stories, side stories, and flashbacks, The Creator shows some beautiful backgrounds and landscapes, but trying to keep up with this very plot-overloaded film becomes a challenge. The military is destroying all AI, some humans are on the side of AI, and Joshua is hunting for the super AI. When Joshua finds the killer AI, it turns out to be a child. Now Joshua has become enamored with the child and goes against all orders to keep it safe. More backstories and flashbacks try to fill in the gaps, but at this point, this movie has gotten so convoluted it’s easy to lose sight of the real plot of the film. The Creator has several decent stories but should have focused on the child AI and left the other stuff for a sequel. By the end of the movie, there were just A lot of empty feelings of uncertainty.

Extras

  • True Love: Making The Creator (HD, 55:47) – “Finding that razor’s edge was the whole game of the shoot.” A very impressive behind the scenes look that focuses on vision, technical achievements, design and craft above all else that really defines why The Creator succeeds.
