MOVIESinMO REVIEW

I love spy movies, but they can screw up the entire genre if they’re not done correctly. Heart Of Stone is a Netflix original starring Gal Gadot as a spy with several secrets that are exposed one by one as the film progresses. Rachel Stone (Gadot), an intelligence technician, and her team have been tasked with capturing an arms dealer. As with most spy flicks, things don’t go as planned, and a fight breaks out, prompting an evacuation and the ever-popular alternate plan. By the end of an extravagant opening scene, a few truths regarding Rachel are front and center. This is also the main problem of Heart Of Stone. As entertaining as it is, you can’t help accusing it of having bits and pieces of every successful spy movie made in the last ten years. Heart Of Stone contains top-of-the-line, never-before-seen spy gadgets. Enough to make James Bond jealous. Infiltrations that could rival anything Mission Impossible would do. A backstory with more twists than Jack Ryan, Salt, Atomic Blonde, and Bourne Identity combined. And a super device any organized crime syndicate would literally kill to own. The acting is okay, albeit a bit stiff sometimes or unnecessarily overacted, but as a whole, it’s about as entertaining as the most recent Fast and the Furious film. Gadot may be a great actor, but she’s utterly unbelievable as the type of spy she portrays. Her co-stars have been better in other movies but seem to be holding back in Heart Of Stone to make Gadot look better as a performer. That being said, Heart Of Stone may be a great Netflix movie, but it’s only a decent movie by theater standards.
