What’s It About
Post war Japan is at its low point when a new crisis emerges in the form of a giant monster.
MOVIESinMO REVIEW
This movie was unbelievably disappointing! Godzilla Minus One is not a Godzilla movie. The entire theater seemed either fast asleep or as irritated as I was – it’s no exaggeration. Nearly everyone was dozing off when I glanced around, and a considerable number left after enduring the first hour of extreme boredom. It was truly absurd. Upon leaving the theater, the consensus was unanimous – a colossal waste of time. To add to the frustration, the entire movie was in Japanese with English subtitles, a crucial detail conveniently omitted in the movie advertisements. The film consisted of a staggering 90% tedious subtitled drama and approximately 10% action. Instead of the anticipated Godzilla spectacle, this is a war drama about a surviving Kamikaze pilot named Shikishima. He lands on Odo Island, inhabited by warplane engineers, for repairs. At that time, everyone is attacked by the monster Godzilla. The failed Kamikaze pilot also failed to take action during Godzilla’s attack. On Shikishima’s way home, he was met with disgust and disappointment once people discovered he was a Kamikaze pilot, a mission you do not come back alive from. Once home, a homeless woman and a baby move into his home. With a heavy failure, his guilt of letting his country down, along with groves of soldiers and civilians’ deaths, drives him to take responsibility and attempt to ultimately defeat Godzilla.
