MOVIESinMO REVIEW
In Spaceman, Adam Sandler plays Jakub, an astronaut who’s been in space for 189 days, studying a strange space cloud near Jupiter. He’s feeling very alone and worried because his wife, Lenka (Carey Mulligan), who is expecting their baby back on Earth, isn’t talking to him. As Jakub struggles with his mission and personal issues, an unexpected companion appears a giant spider alien named Hanuš (voiced by Paul Dano), who can talk to Jakub and seems to know a lot about the universe. Back on Earth, Lenka is also struggling. She’s upset that Jakub is always far away, especially when she needs him the most. The movie shows parts of their relationship, how they started happily but now face hard times. One night, Jakub dreams about a weird spider coming out of his nose, and the next day, Hanuš is there on the ship. This giant spider from another galaxy becomes a sort of space therapist for Jakub, diving into his memories and trying to help him deal with his feelings. The film takes us through Jakub’s life in space and his interactions with Hanuš. They share a special friendship, finding comfort in each other’s company. Despite the solemn mood of the movie, there are some funny moments, especially when the spider starts to feel sad too and looks for snacks to cheer up. Jakub and Hanuš learn about themselves and how to care for someone else. However, Spaceman has its problems. Lenka’s character isn’t explored much, and the movie sometimes feels slow and repetitive. The scenes in space don’t always capture the beauty of the universe, looking more like dull purple clouds. Even with these issues, the film has its moments, thanks to the strong performances from the cast. Adam Sandler shows a different side of his acting skills, playing a more serious and emotional role than usual. Overall, Spaceman is about loneliness, friendship, and learning to move on. It mixes weird space adventures with deep emotional themes. Even though it’s a bit strange and not all parts of the movie work perfectly, it’s interesting to see Sandler in this kind of role, showing that he can do more than just comedy.
