MOVIESinMO REVIEW
After what seemed like an eternity, Deadpool and Wolverine have finally hit theaters. This eagerly awaited superhero film showcases Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool partnering with Wolverine, with Hugh Jackman reprising his iconic role. The inclusion of Jackman’s Wolverine and the involvement of the Time Variance Authority from Loki had fans eagerly anticipating numerous multiversal cameos. And yes, it meets all expectations! They nailed it! The self-proclaimed “Marvel Jesus” is here to save the day in the MCU. The dynamic duo of Wolverine and Deadpool, along with their engaging banter, forms the heart and soul of this film. The distinctive blend of Deadpool’s obnoxious, hilarious, and savage personality, evident from the opening scene to the post-credit sequence and the action-packed narrative, makes this the best Deadpool movie yet. Those not fans of Reynolds’ meta-commentary on the genre might find it grating. But then again, if you aren’t into tasteless 4th wall breaks and extreme bodily harm, why are you watching a Deadpool movie in the first place? The opening sequence immediately hooks you and drags you into Deadpool’s world. It continues the tradition of iconic and often hilarious opening credits as *NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye” plays during a highly violent scene. Rowdy, raunchy, and gloriously gory, Deadpool & Wolverine delivers the action-comedy thrills that draw Marvel enthusiasts and casual viewers seeking hearty laughs. The titular superhumans are down on their luck and in the throes of midlife crises. In other words, Deadpool and Wolverine are losers desperately needing redemption. Both have failed in their worlds and loved ones and will need each other to set things right. Following the events of Deadpool 2, Wade Wilson tried to join a team. He wanted to be part of something larger while holding on to his dwindling relationship with his girlfriend, Vanessa (Morena Baccarin). But both the X-Men and The Avengers turned him away. Now, he works with Peter (Rob Delaney) as a car salesman. On his birthday, he is brought in by the TVA. He meets Mr. Paradox (Matthew Macfadyen) there, who informs Wade that his universe is dying. Anchor beings hold timelines together and can only survive for a limited time after that anchor being dies. In this case, the anchor in Wade’s universe is Logan. Paradox gives Wade an ultimatum, but he decides to go his own way and finds a remorseful Wolverine having an alcoholic pity party. Hugh Jackman has always excelled as Wolverine, and even though he already provided the perfect conclusion to Wolverine’s journey, this role was too compelling to resist. Jackman adds a level of gravitas to Logan, making him more intriguing than he probably deserves to be. We see Wolverine in the comic-accurate yellow costume for the first time, and it looks great. But what captivates fans about the character is more than just his outfit. Despite not getting as many laughs as his on-screen counterpart, Jackman leaves a significant impact by delivering a sincere, heartfelt performance. This Wolverine is full of regret and self-loathing for his past mistakes in his timeline, and he teams up with Deadpool in hopes of atoning for those sins. Jackman isn’t a young man anymore, but he slips into the role like a glove. Say what you will about him returning to a character he once claimed to retire from. Still, no one can accuse Jackman of taking the easy road or cutting corners when portraying Wolverine. There is a lot to appreciate about Deadpool & Wolverine. It features a fantastic array of surprise cameos, self-aware humor, and the trademark inappropriate humor of its intellectual property. Ultimately, this is a Deadpool movie, and you know going in that the plot will be thin. Deadpool & Wolverine is and has always been, pure fan service with enough character depth to please everyone else.
